A newly opened AstraZeneca pharmaceutical park in Qingdao, China, is equipped with a Haier Carrier CO2 (R744) heat pump system that provides comfort heating and cooling across the 54,000m2 (581,251ft2) complex.
Haier Carrier shared the news in a press release detailing the project as well as a video posted to LinkedIn. The Qingdao site features both offices and R&D facilities. The four dual-source HeatCO2OL heat pumps provide a heating capacity of 5.2MW (1,478TR) and a cooling capacity of 950kW (270TR). The heat pumps can provide simultaneous heating and cooling and offer “free heat recovery during cooling and waste heat reuse during heating.” The system also features 12 evaporative heat collectors manufactured by Güntner and cooling towers from BAC.
The CO2 heat pumps are 40% more energy efficient than traditional fossil boilers, according to Haier Carrier.

Production milestone
Haier Carrier also recently announced that it had completed China’s first automated production line for CO2 racks featuring a high-pressure explosion-proof test chamber. The automated production line will increase production eight-fold, the company said, while noting that the “first-of-its-kind testing chamber” meets stringent safety standards of 140bar (2,030psi) for CO2 systems.
“From catching up in technology to independent innovation and from local manufacturing to global delivery, we are building a smart manufacturing base covering all commercial refrigeration and heating scenarios with digitalization, automation and greening as the core,” Haier Carrier said. “This production line is not just a production line but a declaration of China’s refrigeration and heating industry’s transformation toward green, intelligent and efficient development.”
